Friends [101] The One Where Monica Gets a New Roommate

by zippa, putfan

关于TOW,实际上是是the one with... 或者the one where,或者the one which...

她本人居然也有个小coffeehouse,叫central perk,羡呀! perk也是percolate的简写,percolate :water pass slowly through coffee.

Monica: There’s nothing to tell! He’s just some guy I work with!
There’s nothing I can do for you! There’s nothing wrong!

Joey: C’mon, you’re going out with the guy! There’s gotta be something wrong with him!

这句话是Joey挖苦Monica的话,是说这个人(paul)居然和Monica出去约会,一定是有什么毛病的。这句话里going out with someone意思是having a date with someone。还有gotta其实就是have got to的意思,类似的还有gonna=going to;wanna=wanta=want to;

So does he have a hump? A hump and a hairpiece (假发)?

Phoebe: Just, ’cause, I don’t want her to go through what I went through with Carl- oh!

还有过海关是go through the customs,受苦就是go through the pains,隐喻肉体或者精神的炼狱。
what am I supposed to go through before I can make myself a qualified detective like you?

Monica: Okay, everybody relax. This is not even a date. It’s just two people going out to dinner and- not having sex.

Chandler: Sounds like a date to me.

everybody relax.

类似的还有feels like...looks like...

Chandler: Finally, I figure I’d better answer it, and it turns out it’s my mother, which is very-very weird, because- she never calls me!

turn out:结果是..

Ross: I just feel like someone reached down my throat, grabbed my small intestine, pulled it out of my mouth and tied it around my neck...

Carol moved her stuff out today.

No, no don't! Stop cleansing my aura(气氛)!
aura:a quality or feeling that seems to surround or come from a person or a place

Ross: No I don't, to hell with her, she left me!
to hell with her: 滚他妈的

Ross: No!! Okay?! Why does everyone keep fixating on that? She didn’t know, how should I know?

fixate:
To make fixed, stable, or stationary.

Joey: Alright Ross, look. You're feeling a lot of pain right now. You're angry. You're hurting(你很受伤). Can I tell you what the answer is?

Joey: Strip joint! C’mon, you’re single! Have some hormones!

strip joint = strip club,a place where the audience is entertained by performers who remove their clothes while dancing to music, joint=place通常指不那么高雅的地方

(Monica: Oh really, so that hysterical phone call I got from a woman at sobbing 3:00 A.M., "I’ll never have grandchildren, I’ll never have grandchildren." was what? A wrong number?)

Are you alone?

Are you single?

Rachel: Oh God Monica hi! Thank God! I just went to your building and you weren’t there and then this guy with a big hammer said you might be here and you are, you are!

终于有 人忍无可忍的问了一句“Where the hell is she?“,这是Barry无奈的耸耸肩”God knows!”

Waitress: Can I get you some coffee?

Monica: (pointing at Rachel) De-caff. (to All) Okay, everybody, this is Rachel, another Lincoln High survivor. (to Rachel) This is everybody, this is Chandler, and Phoebe, and Joey, and- you remember my brother Ross?

De-caff

Lincoln High 指Lincoln High School.

Rachel: Oh God... well, it started about a half hour before the wedding. I was in the room where we were keeping all the presents, and I was looking at this gravy boat. This really gorgeous Lamauge gravy boat. When all of a sudden- (to the waitress that brought her coffee)Sweet 'n Low?- I realized that I was more turned on by this gravy boat than by Barry! And then I got really freaked out, and that's when it hit me: how much Barry looks like Mr. Potato Head. Y'know, I mean, I always knew looked familiar, but... Anyway, I just had to get out of there, and I started wondering 'Why am I doing this, and who am I doing this for?'. (to Monica) So anyway I just didn't know where to go, and I know that you and I have kinda drifted apart, but you're the only person I knew who lived here in the city.

Monica: Who wasn't invited to the wedding.

Rachel: Ooh, I was kinda hoping that wouldn't be an issue..

Sweet'n Low (trademarked as Sweet'N Low) is a brand of artificial sweetener.

Sweet ’n’ Low=sweet and low;’n=’and,比如说Rock and Roll就会写成Rock ’n’ Roll。

Let’s start.。 类似的用法还有像睡觉hit the bed,上路说hit the road.去电影院hit the movie theater,去酒吧hit the bar,甚至去学校hit the school,去纽约城hit New York city,主打歌hit song打入排行榜hit the billboard,还可以表示遇见某样东西,如hit the traffic light, hit the stop sign。 &hit it off. Are you hitting on me? 而hit it off表示合得来,比如说He was introduced to a party woman and they seem to hit it off immediately.(给他介绍一位漂亮女子后,他们似乎就一见钟情)。
Monica: Who wasn’t invited to the wedding.

wouldn't be an issue:不会有问题

Monica: Joey, stop hitting on (挑逗) her! It's her wedding day!

hit on 挑逗 = make a pass at = make a move on

Monica: Oh God, is it 6:30? Buzz him in!

buzz:
To signal with a buzzer.
To make a telephone call to.
buzz him in就是形象地让他进来。

Chandler: Ooh, this is a Dear Diary moment.
Dear Diary,……
Dear Diary moment
Chandler: I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name. Paul, was it?

Ross: A wandering?

Phoebe: Oh, I wish I could, but I don’t want to.

I wish I could, But....

Ross: So Rachel, what're you, uh... what're you up to tonight?
What're you up to? = What are you going to do?

Rachel: Well, I was kinda supposed to be headed for Aruba on my honeymoon, so nothing!
be headed for = go to

Ross: (squatting and reading the instructions) I'm supposed to attach a brackety (支架的) thing to the side things, using a bunch of these little worm guys. I have no brackety thing, I see no whim guys whatsoever and- I cannot feel my legs.

Joey: Done with the bookcase!
be done with sth. 把...做完了

Joey: You got screwed.
screw = cheat

Rachel: Hi, machine cut me off again... anyway

Joey:
There's Rocky Road, and Cookie Dough, and Bing! Cherry Vanilla.

Joey: You got married, you were, like, what, eight?

Chandler: Stay out of my freezer!

Paul: Ever since she walked out on me, I, uh...

Monica: What?..... What, you wanna spell it out with noodles?
spell out 讲清楚

Monica: I know being spit on is probably not what you need right now. Um... how long?
spit on sb. 向...

Joey: Listen, while you're on a roll, if you feel like you gotta make like a Western omelet or something...
on a roll Informal
Undergoing or experiencing sustained, even increasing good fortune or success: "The stock market's on a roll" Karen Pennar.

Chandler: All right, kids, I gotta get to work. If I don't input those numbers,... it doesn't make much of a difference...

Chandler: 'Look, Gippetto, I'm a real live boy.'

Rachel: Oh, look, wish me luck!

Frannie: Are you kidding? I take credit for Paul. Y'know before me, there was no snap in his turtle for two years.
I take credit for Paul.
snap:
The sudden release of something held under pressure or tension.
turtle:

n. an uncircumcised penis; the head of the penis enclosed in the prepuce
The turtle came out of its shell while I was playing with it.

Joey: (sitting on the arm of the couch)Of course it was a line!

Rachel: Are you kidding? I'm trained for nothing! I was laughed out of twelve interviews today.

Chandler: And yet you're surprisingly upbeat.
upbeat: 乐观的

Chandler: Oh, how well you know me...

Phoebe: You're welcome. I remember when I first came to this city. I was fourteen. My mom had just killed herself and my step-dad was back in prison, and I got here, and I didn't know anybody. And I ended up living with this al'bino guy who was, like, cleaning windshields outside port authority, and then he killed himself, and then I found aromatherapy. So believe me, I know exactly how you feel.
Phoebe的经历

Monica: Well, that's it (To Ross) You gonna crash on the couch?

Ross: No. No, I gotta go home sometime.

crash.
Slang
a. To find temporary lodging or shelter, as for the night. b. To go to sleep.

Ross: Okay. (They split it.) You know you probably didn't know this, but back in high school, I had a, um, major crush on you.
had a crush on: 对...有好感

Ross: You did! Oh.... I always figured you just thought I was Monica's geeky older brother.
geeky:
geek:
An odd or ridiculous person.
